Cost

Attending MCC is affordable!

Attending college can be a big financial commitment. You have to pay tuition, for books and supplies, food and housing, transportation, and other expenses. It can add up quickly.

 Mayland Community College is an excellent value when compared to 4-year colleges and universities.

Mayland Community College's Financial Aid Office is committed to assisting students with the costs of attending college. Scholarships, grants, part-time work, and childcare are a few types of aid available to qualified students. There is an application process for financial aid. We encourage all students to apply for financial assistance.

The Practical Nursing Program is a one-year diploma program (three semesters). Graduates of this program will be eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) which is required to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Employment opportunities include hospitals, long term care/home health facilities, clinics, and physician's offices.
Admission to the PN Program is based on a competitive process. Therefore, interested students must complete the following admission requirements.

Admission Requirements for the PN Program

• High school or state-approved equivalent education diploma.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
• Student must be free of any mental or physical disability or drug that may interfere with fitness to practice nursing.
• Contact Dean of Health Sciences if ever convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, excluding minor traffic violations.
• ENG 111, Expository Writing, or 96 on Accuplacer placement test.
• RED 090, Improved College Reading, or 83 on Accuplacer placement test.
• MAT 080, Intermediate Algebra, or 55 on the arithmetic and 75 on the algebra sections of the Accuplacer placement test.
• Complete the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) at Mayland Community College. The TEAS is a multiple-choice test divided into four subsections: Reading, Mathematics, Science, and English.
• Hold at least a GPA of 2.5 or above.
Any previously taken biology or math/algebra course must be completed with at least a "C" within five years of application for admission to the nursing program.
Students who have completed the application process and meet all requirements for admission will be placed in rank order according to the points accumulated. This ranking will determine each applicant's status as either conditionally accepted or as an alternate.

RANKING POINTS

Each applicant must receive a minimum of 50 total points to be accepted into the PN Program. Points can be received for:
• Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) score.
• Being a resident of Mitchell, Avery, or Yancey County.
• Prior healthcare experience or high school Allied Health Sciences II within the last five years.
• Completing Basic Anatomy & Physiology (points based on GPA in course).
• Completing Anatomy & Physiology I and/or II (points based on GPA in course). Any A&P courses previously taken must have been completed within the last five years.
• Completing CIS 110, Introduction to Computers, with a "C" or better within five years of admission.
• Cumulative GPA from last higher education institution attended, or unweighted high school GPA.
• Attending a PN admissions workshop.
Students interested in applying to the Practical Nursing Program at MCC should request an admissions packet and apply between December 15 – March 24.

Students interested in applying to the Associate Degree Nursing Program at MCC should apply between December 15th, 2011 - March 25th, 2012
