Concurrent Enrollment FAQ
Here's some commonly-asked questions about Concurrent Enrollment at MCC:
What is Concurrent Enrollment?
The Concurrent Enrollment program allows high school students to earn college credit for select courses while in high school. The program was developed to allow students to begin working on their college education while still in high school, thus allowing them to finish their college degree earlier than if they begin classes after high school graduation. There are three different types of concurrent enrollment programs:
1. Huskins - Mayland Community College and your high school are joining together to offer a class that will count toward your high school graduation as well as count toward college credit. This means that the course will be listed on your high school transcript AND your Mayland Community College transcript.
2. Dual Enrollment - you are applying to Mayland Community College on your own – independent of your high school. This means that the course(s) that you take will count toward college credit and may or may not be counted toward high school credit.
3. Learn and Earn - This is a new program for high school students
(grades 9-12). This program gives high school students the ability to earn college credits by taking online courses
Who is eligible for Concurrent Enrollment?
If you are at least 16 years old, meet college placement test standards and your high school eligibility standards, and have written permission from your principal and superintendent, you may participate in Concurrent Enrollment classes.
When are Concurrent Enrollment classes offered?
You can take Concurrent Enrollment classes during school hours, after school or during the summer.
How are grades recorded?
Grades for Huskins courses are recorded on both college and high school transcripts. Grades for Dual Enrollment Classes and Learn and Earn online classes will be recorded on your college transcript and also possibly on your high school transcript.
Are certain courses off-limits?
High school students may not enroll in courses numbered below 100. For example, a high school student would not be allowed to take CHM 092 - Fundamentals of Chemistry.
What does Concurrent Enrollment cost?
Tuition is FREE for any technical, math, or science, class! Students may take other transfer courses such as art, English, history for the cost of regular tuition. Students are required to buy a textbook, if required, and supplies for the course.
