Monica Boyd came to Mayland Community College by chance. She graduated from high school in the top 10% of the class, but at the time lacked the self-confidence needed to go to a four-year university.

"I was unsure of what I wanted to do, even though I had received a scholarship to a four-year university," said Boyd. "I still found myself intimidated of the uncertainty. So at the last minute, I decided to enroll at Mayland Community College, a decision that changed my life forever."

Everyone at Mayland was helpful and supportive, said Boyd. She felt she received the encouragement needed to help build her confidence.

"This group of people at Mayland affected my life so much by helping me grow in my education and as a person that it made me decide that I wanted to work in the community college system and help others," said Boyd.

Boyd completed her Associates Degree and then obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Business through the GOAL program at Gardner Webb University that was offered on Mayland's campus.

Boyd then became interested in a Master's in Education program offered at Western Carolina University (WCU) on Mayland's campus.

She completed her Doctorate in Education with a concentration in Community College Leadership from WCU, and is now employed at Mayland Community College as the Director of Enrollment Management.

"I hope that I can reach out to students and help them gain the confidence to grow and excel," said Boyd. "Mayland opened doors for me and helped me find my true path in life."
