Dana Fox Destefano had dreamed of be coming a nurse since she was 12. In high school she took all the health occupations classes she could, and volunteered her time at the local hospital. After graduating from Mountain Heritage High School, she enrolled in the Nursing Program at Mayland Community College.
"Mayland's Nursing Program was tough, but I learned all the fundamentals and skills for entering into the work force," said Destefano. "It was a very hands on program, and the instructors were willing to go out of their way to help you learn if you were willing."
According to Destefano, her textbooks and notes helped her during her first job working as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
"The information they tell you in the classroom, does come back to you when you need it," Destefano said. "If you listened to your instructors and put your heart in it, you can succeed."
Destefano says the college staff also helped her receive Pell Grants to help fund her education.
Destefano has worked as an LPN for the last 21 years. She is currently working at the Brian Center in Weaverville and says long-term care is where she belongs.
"I go to work because I love what I do," said Destefano. "The people that I help take care of deserve to be treated like family, and a simple thank you can make my day."
Destefano says she would encourage anyone interested in pursuing his or her education to go for it.
"There is a door available if you will open it, and you might find something that will fill any empty places you have in your heart," said Destefano. "You won't regret it!"
