Charles J. Edwards (CJ) is taking his love of computers to the classroom as he begins his degree in Information Systems Technology this spring at Mayland Community College.
Edwards recently earned his GED through Mayland's Basic Skills Program. He completed his diploma while working part time at Kentucky Fried Chicken in Spruce Pine. In March, Edwards also enrolled in the goal based Get REAL youth program administered by the Mitchell County Joblink and Mayland Community College. This program helps train youth for the workforce.
"While studying for the GED CJ also worked at KFC and proved that he could balance the responsibilities of work and school," said Basic Skills faculty member Sherry Weeks.
Basic Skills Recruiter Joyce Boone and faculty members Brenda Ollis and Weeks enabled CJ to focus on the areas and learning style that best fit his needs for his success.
"CJ was a faithful student while preparing for the GED exam, and used his determination to help him reach his goal," said Ollis.
Edwards was also provided with a $100 check through the Get REAL program for attaining his goal.
"CJ worked hard and stayed focused," said Get REAL Program Career Coach Allen Cook. "He is a bright young man that saw the need for education in light of today's challenging labor market. CJ has a bright future,"
From a very young age, Edwards held an interest in computers. Coupled with his advanced abilities and love of music allowed him to channel his creative energies. Through the WIA Program, Edwards will gain work experience with computers while he is attending Mayland by working with McKinney Computers in Spruce Pine.
Edwards also participated in 4-H and played trombone in the school band.
Edwards is the son of Charles and Faye Edwards of Spruce Pine. He is a member of White's Memorial Baptist Church and also enjoys attending Abundant Life Outreach. He enjoys being a performer on the Whites' Drama Team, and has traveled with his drama group on several mission events.
The Get REAL Program is for youth between the ages of 16 and 21 who are interested in going back to school to earn their GED or advanced degree. Get REAL program participants work with a personal career coach dedicated to help with their future goals.
