A former graduate of Mayland Community College's Cosmetology Department returned to talk about make-up consultations, skin types, and other areas of cosmetics. Allison Potter, a 2005 cosmetology program graduate, enjoyed working with MAC Cosmetics and shared her experiences with Mayland students.

Potter's experience with MAC Cosmetic Company allowed her to work on photo shoots and on movie sets as a make-up artist. She also served as a featured make-up artist at special events and festivals in the South.

Potter was certified by MAC Cosmetics as a fashion make-up artist, a runway make-up artist, and as a basic make-up artist.

"I went through very extensive training to become certified in different make-up areas while I worked for MAC Cosmetics," said Potter. "I was able to travel a lot, and have now moved back to the area to open my own business."

Potter will be opening a combination tanning bed salon and special event make-up studio in Newland.

She said her experiences as a student at Mayland helped prepare her for her career.

"If you want to accomplish something in life, you should not be afraid to go for it," said Potter. "There will be opportunities out there if you just try for them."
